Masrur: is 26 km. from Gaggal on Nagrota Surian link road and is famous for
remarkable group of rock-cut temples. They form a group of 15 monolithic
Rock-Cut temples in the Indo-Aryan style and are richly carved. The temples
partly ruined now are profusely decorated with sculptural ornamentations The
main shrine contains three stone images of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita. But the
presence of the figure of Shiva in the centre of the Lintel affords a strange
magnificently stands on a hill crest, The rock-cut temple complex is a unique example of monolithic temple in sub-Himalayan region the entire complex comprises more then fifteen Sikhara-temple and large rectangular water tank hewn-out of the sand stone-rock most of the Shikhaar have fallen down and considerable damage has been caused by the earthquake of April 1905 in the centre of complex stand the principal and the most elaborately carved shrine the thakurdwaar enshrining the Blackstone images of Rama Sita and Laksmana facing east. it consist of a square garbhagriha in antarala, a rectangular Mandapa with four massive columns and a mukhammandapa with four subsidiary shrines on either side. the magnificent doorway to the garbhagriha has five akhas ornamented with graceful and dainty foliate patterns bands of diamonds etc and sculpture. the tall pilasters of the antrala and the mukhammandapa are ornately embellish with diamonds ,ardh-padma pair of ghatapallava and other decorative motif, the massive columns of the Mandapa show a plain shaft rising from a vase with foliage designs . these stand on a square pedestal with diamond motifs from each side of the Mandapaa ascends to a roof terrace it appears that this temple was originally dedicated to lord Shiva ,as indicated by the presence of the figure of lord Siva on lalata of the doorway in the absence of inscription and any other contemporary epigraphic or literary record the patronage of the temple can not be ascertained. however. on the basis of architectural and sculptural decoration the temple has been assign the date to eight-ninth century and view of its architectural scriptural importance it was declared protected as s monument of national importance |
